Going back to school might look different for college students this year… I know many students (including my little sister) who will be spending even more time in their dorms or apartments as some classes move online! Whether you’re in college or just left, putting together a stylish and functional space is more important than ever, and I’m excited to share some ways in which you can pack in more style for your budget and space with The Home Depot’s Back to Class selection. I designed this college bedroom with student-friendly upgrades that are perfect for renters, small-spaces, and easy on the wallet. Get all the room design details below!

This bedroom is a typical white box, so I wanted to layer color, pattern, and texture to surfaces in the space to create an inviting look. I started with an area rug covering most of the floor with a classic pattern in a neutral color. Both the color and pattern are helpful when it comes to hiding unexpected stains, and the lower-pile makes this rug super easy to clean.
On the wall behind the bed, I used a removable wallpaper with a cool bird pattern and a dark grey, textured background. This adds so much dimension to the space and makes this wall the focal point in the room. By expanding this wall with pattern, the room actually feels a bit bigger! You can get a glimpse of the easy install of this peel-and-stick design in my YouTube video.
One of my favorite college bedroom hacks is placing a Home Decorators Collection desk by the bed to double-up on function. This makes it both a nightstand and workspace! If you look closely you can see the table lamp on this desk has a USB connection, so it’s perfect to place by the bed. I love the clean white mid-century style of this desk and the cute gold hardware on the drawers! I paired it with a blue velvet side chair, because you know I love anything blue velvet…
I tucked some extra storage in at the end of the bed with an upholstered bench, which is a great piece for small spaces because it can act as seating or an accent piece while also providing lots of space to tuck away out-of-season clothes or extra shoes.
I created the cutest vignette opposite the bed with this adorable retro mini-fridge! Don’t forget about the top of the fridge for another surface to place a plant, tray, or some cookware like I did in here. Next to the fridge I added a ladder-style bookshelf, which is great for small spaces because of the tapered design, which makes it look like it takes up less space in the room. This one is perfect for holding larger bins on the bottom and smaller items like books up top.
It’s so important to create a super comfortable bed when you’re a busy student, and I found the perfect bed essentials like an affordable mattress, comfortable pillows, a comforter, and a classic white duvet from Home Decorators Collection. The affordable StyleWell headboard is such a great find – the classic water hyacinth adds a warm natural element to the room and is so classic. I layered throw pillows and a blanket on top to add extra coziness!
I found the cutest table lamps, pillows, and artwork to finish off the space with pops of color from Home Depot’s website and app. It’s so easy to favorite items when shopping on the mobile app so you can easily create a shopping list, and so many items offer free shipping online. With such a huge selection there are so many possibilities for back to class style, and I hope this soothing blue and grey college bedroom design inspires you!
