It feels fitting to conclude this four-post holiday series with my favorite holiday tradition, decorating the tree. My dad moved early this year and didn’t have many ornaments to start with, so I picked a theme and found a beautiful selection of tree baubles and lights at Target to make his dining room sparkle. If you follow me on Snapchat (username: thouswell), you may already know that I decided to go with a “metallic woodland” theme, focusing on the pattern of pinecones and mixing different shapes and sizes as well as gold, silver, and copper finishes. To balance the mix, I picked up a set of round, gold ornaments to provide solid, simple shapes for a bit of rest for the eyes, and I also found a fun set of owls and different animals to add for a whimsical mix. Instead of a traditional tree skirt, I used a faux-fur throw to wrap the tree base.
Long meals are central to all of our holiday traditions, so it felt natural to put the tree in the dining room so it could be in the room where most of our holiday memories are made. To make the room even cozier, I added curtains and a wreath to the window, and a pouf on the floor. Adding soft elements to the dining room in the winter makes it feel warmer, but it also invites people to hang out while my dad is cooking. Since his dining room and kitchen connect, the dining room becomes more of our living room in the winter when the warm stove and great smells make it the coziest space in the house!
I love how inviting my dad’s dining room is now. The mixed metals make it really shine (and they look great with his green walls)! Which room of the house do you make most of your holiday memories?
