This year’s HGTV Dream Home celebrates its 25th anniversary, and the house is located in scenic Newport, Rhode Island. It’s such a dreamy location and the design takes inspiration from the Newport mansions, especially in the exterior design with coastal shingles and grey hardscaping materials from Belgard®. Designed by Brian Patrick Flynn, the house takes the year’s most significant design stories and brings them to life in creative ways in each room, from using Sherwin-Williams colors of the year to incorporating lots of outdoor living areas for backyard gatherings.
Inside the house, herringbone floors inspired by the grand Gilded Age estates was used on the main floor, and continues up the fireplace in the double-story living room. The house is full of color which Flynn never shies away from. Since the house is so light-filled, the rooms remain bright but fully saturated with the Sherwin-Williams paint palette.
The home’s ocean views inspired a curated infusion of coastal decor in each room, nodding to the seaside location while balancing the home’s fresh modern-Americana style.

I got a chance to preview the house with Brian Patrick Flynn and Belgard, to learn more about the outdoor design and materials. The grey tones, inspired by the stone mansions, were abundant in the hardscaping like the Lafitt® Rustic Slab on the patio that mimics the color and texture of natural slate. The outdoor areas were more important this year than ever, so Belgard created outdoor “rooms,” separating the living, dining, cooking, and fire pit areas for a whole series of alfresco entertaining spaces. The result is both beautiful and functional!
